Hello! I'm just getting started with Oomph 'cause I want to make a standard eclipse install for my company.
I've made a setup file (https://gist.github.com/tramasoli/bc2786a38519d3aed1fddfc09c6b4de6) and tested locally but the installer never finishes correctly. Instead I receive this messages:
"
The engine operation was cancelled and the changes are being rolled back.
Took 153 seconds.
Task execution was canceled.
Press Back to choose different settings or Cancel to abort.
"
The full log is here (https://gist.github.com/tramasoli/c9288cdd6c8e90e1e99dadb1f0b18f6a), I'm on Ubuntu 16.04:
lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial

--

I've tested the same setup file with another Ubuntu machine and a Windows machine and it finishes correctly, but I want to test the setup in my machine.
Even the "vanilla eclipse setups" don't work with Oomph, I had to install through the zip file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tested it on my Windows machine just now and the installer produced an installation for me and that installation runs... Perhaps you're running the installer itself with Java 7 but installing things that are Java 8 based?

Hello,

I have the same problem on my fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04. The java-neon installer fails with no specific message:
- in normal install mode the installation process starts, then the GUI comes back to the INSTALL button;
- in advanced mode, it ends with the message "Task execution was canceled. Press Back to choose different settings or Cancel to abort."

I have tried with both the openjdk8 and the Oracle jdk. I have also tried with and without the "Mirrors" option, following a comment on this forum. No success either. Everything else is set to the default values.

Here is the final screen provided by the installer ("Mirrors" unticked):

The only file remaining after the crash is a log file, which contains the same thing as what I reported above. But just in case, I also attach it. It's located in java-neon/eclipse/configuration/org.eclipse.oomph.setup/setup.log.

A bug report has also been filed, which seems to match our problem: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=508945

Hi.

I'm experiencing the same problem you report for both neon and oxygen versions, in my fresh installation of Ubuntu 16.10, where I've tried with openjdk 8 and 9 and also with oracle-java. The installation program stops and the message given is always the same: "The engine operation was cancelled and the changes are being rolled back.", and no further info is provided. I have to say that I could install neon version following the same procedure some months ago, so I guess something has changed and now it doesn't work. And the release itself is not the problem since I have seen many people complaining from this very same issue while using different Ubuntu releases.

Thank you.
Álvaro.

Thanks! I'll make the test with an older installer, but it really seams my exact problem. As soon as I'm allowed to post in the bugzilla I'll comment and to count as an affected user.

Thanks for the help Ed but my tests inside the company showed this kind of result too, it is really awkward since it seams to work in some environments but not in others.
I think Jean-Philippe may be right pointing at that bug. I'll try an older version of the installer for now and watch the bug thread.

Hi Fabio.

I have bypassed the problem. You can download eclipse in the old-fashion way, that is, download the zip containing some specific package. If you go to https://www.eclipse.org/downloads, click on "Download Packages" just below of "Eclipse Neon" - "Download 64 bit". On the next page, you will be able to select your preferred package (C/C++, java, php, etc) and download it in Neon eclipse version. If you want to try Oxygen, just click on "Developer builds".

I hope will be helpful.
Cheers.

Thanks Alvaro but this would not fulfill my needs as I want to make a custom install of Eclipse to my coworkers hence the use of Oomph Smile

I'm considering this thread as closed because there is a great chance I'm hitting bug 508945 is +90% and the bug is being greatly well handled by the Eclipse team Smile

Thank you all.

I've continued to investigate and added my findings to the bug. I.e., I'm pretty sure I know exactly what causes the problem, even though I can't reproduce it locally.

I'm working with Eike on a fix that I hope will be committed and built later today, so you should be able to update your installer with the fix, once it's built. I see you're CC'd on the bug, so stay tuned for the fix. Sorry for the hassle this has caused.

Hi Ed, no problem at all, I'm just getting started with Oomph and the "downgrade" to version 1.5 solved my issue for now.

As soon as the bug fix is released I'll test it. Thanks for all the help, you guys were very fast to help, identify and fix the problem! Smile

By the way, Oomph is a GREAT tool! Congrats for building/participating in it!

Exactly the same problem if I update the installer. No problem if I keep the 1.5.0 version downloaded from eclipse.org.

I see there's a fix committed yesterday, but that is not the one you get if you update the installer today, is it?

cheers
Lorenzo

Eike has produced a new build, and the composite repos have been updated to point at it, so updating the installer should update to the build with the fix. We've also produced new installer downloads, so those should be available as well.
