Eclipse somehow have updated to Neon (even auto updates were disabled) updated to Neon! I've noticed it when I wasn't able to run it. I had to install Java 8 and edit eclipse.ini (f*cking reverse engineering). Then I've noticed that I have lost splash screen! Some parts remained from Mars. E.g. the panels are still as wide as in Mars (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=494247). How can I perform full upgrade to Neon? Will reinstalling of eclipse destroy my profile?

Perhaps you installed using the installer and you picked "Latest
Released" as the product version, rather than just Mars. That product
version is a moving target and will update to the latest release when it
becomes the latest release.

Yes, Neon requires Java 1.8.

To point at at that JVM? Was it pointing to an older version?

Yes, there were problems with the splash screen updates. That's fixed
now, but the older version you were using to do the update didn't have
that fix...

You can create a new installation quickly with the installer. All the
bundles should be in your pool from your old update, so that should be
very fast.

You probably should install into a new location before you delete the
old installation.

I've changed the something like /usr/bin/java/...openjdk-1.7.0 to openjdk-1.8.0

BTW I've read later that upgrade from Mars to Neon should be impossible and users must perform, manual installation

Yan,

Yes, you can't use a normal p2 update to update from Mars to Neon. But
Oomph can do this easily because it doesn't rely just on using the
existing root features to do the update, it can use the root features
specified in the product version (which have completely changed in Neon
to include many independent root features so you can update each feature
more easily).
