I am running Eclipse Mars.2 under Ubuntu 16.04 on an HP P1080A with 16GB of memory, an Intel P7 processor and dual monitors. With a fresh install of both packages I am unable to see most Eclipse preferences. The steps to reproduce this problem follow:

1. Install Ubuntu on a bare machine or in a VirtualBox virtual machine.
2. Update Ubuntu with latest fixes.
3. Install Eclipse Mars.2 C/C++ package or Eclipse RCP/RAP package.
4. Start Eclipse
5. Go to preferences via Window->Preferences
6. The preferences dialog will be presented and contains two panes. The left-hand pane is a topic navigation pane and the right-hand pane contains the preference content for that topic.
7. Initially, the left hand-pane will show the topic General as selected and the right-hand pane will show the General preferences.
8. Select any other topic e.g. C/C++ in the navigation pane.
9. The C/C++ topic will be shown as selected but the contents of the content pane will NOT change to reflect the newly selected topic.
10. This behavior will happen no matter which topic is selected.
11. You can expand any of the top level topics to see sub-topics and selecting a sub-topic will result in the same behavior.
12. I deleted the .log file and tested with the empty file. Nothing was logged during this testing process.

This behavior means that I am unable to change almost all Eclipse preferences which rather limits the effectiveness of Eclipse in my environment. This behavior only occurs on Ubuntu 16.04. Doing the same thing with Ubuntu 15.10 works properly. I have a few questions related to this problem.

1. Is there any workaround which will allow me to set the preferences I need. For example can I manually edit configuration files and in that case where will I find these files?
2. Is this something that should be reported on Bugzilla?
3. Does this entry contain sufficient information for a bug report, and if not what should I add?

Perhaps it's a GTK 3 problem. You could try using
--launcher.GTK_version 2 in the eclipse.ini before the -vmargs so that
it uses GTK 2 instead of 3...

I already have done that and it did not help. Forgot to put it in the post.

Which RAP things did you install. I think only the RAP Tools should be
installed in the IDE; the other RAP things (nested in the EclipseRT
Target Platform Components category should only be provisioned into a
target platform and will no doubt create problems if actually installed
in the IDE.

With RCP/RAP I installed nothing after starting Eclipse except to test preferences. With C/C++ I had the preference problem both before installing DLTK and after. It appears to be there with completely vanilla installs.

Mars.2 is apparently fairly broken under Ubuntu 16.04. I believe it includes a very broken version of GTK3 and possibly GTK2. The SWT developers have been recommending using a Neon milestone build instead. They're usually stable.

I presented the same problem when installing eclipse using eclipse-install on my laptop with ubuntu 16.04. The solution was simple: I download only eclipse-cpp-mars-2-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz and the problem is not presented with the preference pane.
