Dear all,

Microsoft announced the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to be released in summer 2016
(http://betanews.com/2016/04/24/windows-10-anniversary-update-rocks/)

This update will contain the Windows Subsystem for Linux, allowing users to run bash commands and Linux applications
(https://blogs.windows.com/buildingapps/2016/03/30/run-bash-on-ubuntu-on-windows/
http://www.howtogeek.com/249966/how-to-install-and-use-the-linux-bash-shell-on-windows-10/)

In fact , WSL is already available in Insider Previews for those who susbscribe
(https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2016/04/22/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-14328-for-pc-and-mobile/ )

so we run a few experiments on it from Titan perspective.

Good news is, we could:

-add the required packages with apt-get
-clone the Titan core github repository (https://github.com/eclipse/titan.core)
-compile Titan
-execute Titan in single mode

Parallel execution run into problems on several levels, however this is not the final version of the WSL (currently it's based on Ubuntu 14.04; the final version will be apparently based on Ubuntu 16.04)
and obviously some parts are missing (ping, ifconfig does not run, although there is some networking - we could do apt-get update, curl etc . works too) so we hope it will improve.
If and when we manage to run Titan seamlessly on WSL , Windows 10 will constitute a great development environment for Titan and TTCN-3:
the Java plug-ins can be installed under Windows , with the core residing in WSL. When development is finished, the code can be pushed to a production server.
So far we recommended our users willing to use Windows to install Cygwin or MinGW on top; Win 10 with WSL could offer a comfortable , no-compromise replacement for both.

For the moment we will set this issue aside, waiting for the Anniversary Update; with that installed , we will re-examine the situation and try to solve any technical problems should arise.

Until then , stay tuned!
