How to fix bad color combinations? [message #1728826] Thu, 07 April 2016 16:49 Go to next message

I know that Eclipse lets me change colors and fonts, but it's never been obvious what color property controls particular views, and what other views those same properties control.

My platform is CentOS7.2 and Ubuntu, both with Mars.2.

I include here a portion of a screenshot showing the "Javadoc" view on my CentOS box, which renders with a black background, with emphasized text in dark blue. This is almost unusable. I also see this same color combination in tooltips.

What color properties should I set to get a better rendering?

David,

Did you choose a dark theme? Or is this just the default? I have an
Ubuntu virtual machine (goodness knows the window manager) and it
doesn't look like this at all...

I know from personal experience trying to get my own UI contributions
working with "dark theme" that these theming issues in Eclipse are a bit
of a disaster area. My code setting colors has no idea what the theme
will change them to later. So while I might set a background color to
white and the foreground color to black, the styler will come along
later and change the background to light gray and the foreground color
the dark gray. It makes me sad too...

David,

Back when I ran under Lucid, I was using some brownish theme (under
Gnome), which came by default and had this self-same problem. I solved
it by switching my theme to ClearLooks. I know this all changed somewhat
when Unity came out, but I remember fixing it after I began to use that
as well (I put Unity behind me and run Mint/Cinnamon).

You might Google ClearLooks or just change the theme you use to a
different one.

Also, in Help -> Eclipse Marketplace, there's a plug-in called Eclipse
Color Theme (as I recall) that might be even easier to implement
especially if you don't want to muck with your system-wide desktop.

Best of luck.

Thanks, but that "Eclipse Color Theme" thing didn't do anything useful. I tried changing the theme and the "color and font" theme, but nothing seemed to make any changes to the interface at all.

It's worked very well for me on Ubuntu, Mint (which is Ubuntu corrected)
and Fedora. Hard for me to speculate as to why it doesn't for you. I
hope you can find a solution, my friend. Best of luck to you!

I ended up just manually changing the javadoc background color. I would have changed it to white, but it appears that I can't control the foreground color (it's also white), so I had to set the background color to something in between (chose a light green for now).
