Hello everyone,

I'm currently running Eclipse Kepler on Windows 7 as a PHP Dev environment with PDT and EGit plugins.

Regarding an upgrade what's the best plan of action?

Uninstall Kepler and install the Eclipse installer? Or can I use the installer to update Kepler directly?

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Typically you can and probably should update from within the
installation itself (using Help -> Check for Updates).

Another approach is to create a new installation, but note that you
don't need to uninstall anything because nothing is installed in the
traditional sense. I.e., no Windows registries are updates when you use
the installer to create an installation.

You'd not use the installer to update an installation. You could use it
to overwrite an installation, but that's not so likely what you want.

What are you trying to update the installation to? I.e., Kepler is
pretty (very) old. Don't you just want to create a new Mars.2
installation? It would seem better to me to try to create a new
installation (in a new location), making sure that works as you want
before you delete the old installation...

Keep in mind that the Eclipse installation is totally separate from the workspace(s) that you have created with it. In other words, you can install a new version and then point it to your existing workspace(s) and you won't lose your projects or preferences. The only thing you might have to do is re-install any third-party plugins that you may have added to your old installation of Eclipse.

Thanks Ed,

from you reply I gather the best thing to do is download the installer and install the latest version in a new location. That way I can ensure all my plugins etc work before moving forward.

Thanks again for your help.
