First, this is my first attempt to build a Ubuntu VM (VMWare) and install Eclipse to begin a new project.

I downloaded and used the new "Installer" to install Eclipse Mars.1 (CDT). A very nice experience for sure, thank you.

Eclipse appears to run, I created a "Hello World" project and it builds and the debugger runs. However, there are a couple of issues. The first may be some Newbie error because I do not see a menu bar across the top of Eclipse, how do I make this visible?

The second issue is related to getting Eclipse on the Launcher for easy access. While Eclipse is running there is an icon on the Launcher, however it is NOT the Eclipse icon, it is a grey icon with a large "?" on it. If I lock this icon to the Launcher, exit Eclipse and try to use the icon to re-launch Eclipse it does not appear, I have to go back to double clicking "eclipse" in /Home/eclipse/cpp-mars/eclipse.

Any help resolving these two issues would be so much appreciated,
Sid

My 2 cents...

Years ago before I gave up on Ubuntu Unity, I found it impossible to
create a launcher for Eclipse. That may have changed. I ran in that mode
for about a month before putting Cinnamon on Ubuntu, then a couple of
months later fleeing it altogether for Linux Mint (which is sanitized
Ubuntu).

Also, I remember many applications under Unity tend to lose their menu
bars unless you change a setting. Google around for that. There's either
one of those three-stripe things like we see in Chrome and Firefox.
Google is your friend.

Far be it from me to encourage you to try Mint. You could also try
running Cinnamon on Ubuntu to get back that desktop in place of that
tablet feel.

Albeit lame, I hope this helps at least a little. Best of luck.

Russell, many thanks for taking the time to respond. I resolved the missing menus, turns out there is a setting that moves them to the main menu bar, and that is only visible if you mouse over it. I changed that option to use the application title bar and I now have menus.

I guess I need to Google Cinnamon and how to replace Unity with that. Oh the joys of learning new tools!
Thanks again,
Sid

Glad to help Sid. I'll go ahead and suggest you check out Linux Mint.
Underneath it's the latest Ubuntu and you choose a desktop manager.
Cinnamon is the no-brainer if you used to use Gnome on Ubuntu. It's very
close. There's also Mate, but I haven't tried it. The point is, you're
free of the whole Unity tablet interface thing. I personally just want
to write code. Cute and fancy stuff for children and mobile users sort
of gets in my way.

Best of luck.
