It has been a year since the initial contribution from 1C was released as Handly 0.1. Now we are very pleased to announce the on-time availability of the Handly 0.3 release. It includes major new features, such as an outline framework, integration with text editors (in addition to Xtext editor), a real-world exemplary implementation (a simplified Java model), and more. This release is primarily focused on bringing more value to early adopters while further evaluating the Handly core framework.

Here are some of the main themes of this release:

API Quality -- A very important ongoing theme. This release includes a number of API enhancements.

Common UI Components -- A first for this release, a number of reusable UI components including an outline framework, working set support, and integration with text editors is now shipped with Handly.

Exemplary implementations -- Another first for this release, a sufficiently real-world exemplary implementation is now provided: a simplified Java model. There is no corresponding UI yet, only the core model and a bunch of tests.

Integration with Xtext 2.8 -- This release supports Xtext 2.8 and is not compatible with previous Xtext versions.

No major release can happen without some API breakage. Here is a summary of breaking changes in this release.

Despite the "incubating technology" status of Handly, there already are three known major adopters (in chronological order): 1C:Enterprise Development Tools, erlide (in yet-to-be-released version 0.30), and Codasip Studio -- two commercial products and an esteemed open-source IDE. We are very grateful for their vote of confidence to the project, active participation and valuable feedback. With this release, we hope to encourage further adoption and receive broader feedback.

Some design discussions with early adopters are already taking place on this forum, but also (as it stands, chiefly) on the handly-dev mailing list, with potentially even more interesting discussions soon to follow.

We would much appreciate your feedback about this release and about Handly in general.

Thank you!

The Handly Team
