Yes, it's a bit off-topic, but I'll try to give you some perspective.
An application written in Java as a back-end service, that is, running
on your web server probably in a server container like Tomcat, might be
something you'd want to write assuming you need a database, search
engine, payment engine or some other high-level service you have to
write or interface to yourself.
(What your friend said doesn't really rhyme with anything except that,
yes, you can write games in Java.)
I will say, however, that if you are downloading Eclipse not knowing
whether you really need it or really need to code in Java, it's likely
going to be a very long slog uphill from here.
Don't let me discourage you.
I would try to find someone more knowledgeable than your friend to help
give more perspective. Java/JEE is the best back-end development
framework in the industry for web application development. If you decide
this is what you want to do, then download Eclipse and learn Java with
it. As you learn, you'll begin to understand what you can do to enhance
your website (but you're a long way from there right now).
If you decide to walk this road, I can't think of a better place to
start than http://www.vogella.com/tutorials/.
Hope this helps; best of luck to you!
