When editing/building in eclipse, I occasionally get the following error:

"The project was not built since the source file ... could not be read"

The source file in question can be edited, saved, updated, committed, etc,
but the error will not go away by refreshing or cleaning. The only way I
can keep working is by restarting eclipse and THEN doing a refresh, but
sooner or later the problem recurs. Usually it is on the same file, but
not always.

Any idea why this is happening, and what I can do about it?

Linux lnx5e023 2.4.21-32.EL #1 SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux
KDE 3.1.3-6.10 Red Hat
Eclipse SDK
Version: 3.3.0
Build id: I20070625-1500

The most common cause is an incompatible encoding in the file. I get
these some times on linux when I get a file with cp1252 (or whatever the
window encoding is) ...

Are you only editing files on one platform? Or are you getting them
from another machine/repository as well? Are there any errors in your
error log? <workspace>/.metadata/.log

Later,
PW
