5.5.x. I reverted to using Tomcat 5.0.28 and that fixed the
nullPointerException when deploying web service.

although my java_home is not pointing to that directory.

Hi,

Please note that defect 92603 had been opened for looking into the problem
of getting Axis 1.1 to work with JDK1.5:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=92603

Not sure if this is still a problem with Axis 1.2.

This problem is documented in the Known Problem section of the M4 News and
Noteworthy document for Web services.
