| Eclipse hangs 'Updating project <project name>' [message #1754522] |

When starting Eclipse it tries to update the project and it hangs at 19% When I click in the edit window eclipse really hangs and I can only force quit eclipse. Eclipse can be quite slow so I left it alone for 45 minutes but the update score remained at 19%. I tried deleting the .projects directory according to a stackoverflow article but that didn't help.
I use Mint 18.1 with Mate. I changed two things which might might affect this behavior:
1. Yesterday I replaced openjdk by oracle jdk because of javaFX issues. I was able to run Eclipse after that and my projects ran without issues
2. tonight I changed the kernel from version 4.4 to 4.8. After that I ran Eclipse once without problems.
