Fresh calisto install with CDT is slow everywhere [message #161694] Wed, 19 July 2006 12:21 Go to next message

Hi all,

Please forgive me if this something really basic but I'm having real speed
issues.

I've followed the Calisto install details from:
http://www.eclipse.org/callisto/c-dev.php

Downloading Eclipse3.2 went ok, starting it went ok, using the Calisto
Discovery Site to install CDT went well.

Following the link on the page above:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?r=1&file=/ technology/phoenix/demos/install-cdt/callisto-cdt.html

I'm noticing that eclipse is incredibly unresponsive. After creating a new
"managed c++" project I have a tree on the left of the window with:
TestProject
Includes
Debug
test.cc

Clicking (or more importantly right clicking) on "TestProject" takes over
a minute to display the context menu. Clicking on test.cc also takes over
a minute to allow me to start editing. Once I can edit the source code the
editor is responsive, but so far I've been unable to do much simply
because of the time I have to hold a finger on the mouse for the action to
happen.

The machine I'm using is Slackware10.1 with JRE_1.5.0_07. I'm using
Dropline Gnome and haven't had many java problems previously. Certainly
nothing as odd as this.

The machine itself is P4 Xeon 3Ghz and is running with 1gig of ram. Prior
to starting eclipse leaves me with 180megs free. I've yet to see it use
any swap space so I'm guessing this isn't a memory problem.

a quick tcpdump later revealed it didn't appear to be trying to talk over
the network . I wondered if this was due to a slow external resource.

Seeing as so many people are using eclipse, this must be a strange
problem. I know people have said it is slow, but this machine is fairly
beefy and it is really very very slow and currently unusable.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for increasing the speed. I'm
uncertain where to look for the problem since it hasn't actually reported
any errors. It just seems every other mouse click the display will freeze
and I'll have to wait for it to wake again.

This is the first time I've looked at eclipse in many years. The last time
the project was too new and wouldn't have fit in with work at the time.
Now, I'm hoping I can use it to develope but I'm already stuck!

Cheers

Chris

Not many of the CDTers troll through eclipse.newcomer that I've seen.
You'll have better luck asking your question over on eclipse.tools.cdt.
You've documented it so well I think they'll even respond! ;-)

I'm sorry no one here was of help...
