Packaging Project Meeting

January 18, 2007

Attendees

Dan Rubel (Instantiations)

Jochen Krausse (Innoopract)

Markus Knauer (Innoopract)

Elias Volanakis (Innoopract)

Pascal Rapicault (IBM)

Ian Skerrett (Eclipse Foundation)

Minutes from the Meeting

- It was agreed that the project would have two main components: 1)
Packaging Component and 2) Installation Component). There was also
agreement that the project would produce a subset of exemplary packages
based on a number of user profiles.

- The project will focus on keeping the technology and packages as simple as
possible. There was a general concern of avoiding scope creep.

- The goal was to have the first packages ready for Europa. The plan will
be to use these packages as the main downloads on eclipse.org. The
definition of the packages will be done after the project is created.

- Instantiation will likely donate their installation framework as the basis
of the Installation Component. Dan wanted to ensure that the requirements
for the installation framework would not expand considerably beyond the
existing functionality. He also pointed out that their installation
framework can do a complete install or just installs a plug-in. He wanted
to ensure that both modes would continue to be maintained since they use
both in their commercial products. He was specifically concerned that the
ability to just install plug-ins was not removed. It was agreed that this
was the case.

- Pascal raised concerns about the strategy to include an install component.
He was concerned that 1) there are existing commercial installers and should
this project be moving into this space, and 2) adding an install component
felt like the start of scope creep towards provisioning. Pascal described
that the Platform team is considering rewriting update manager to better
facilitate dynamic provisioning. Although no plans are in place, Pascal
was concerned that this project would start to overlap with the Platform
team's plan. It was agreed that the install component must not start to do
provisioning but just focus on a simple, initial install experience. Also,
as the Platform team's plans for the update manager and provisioning become
better understood and solidified, the packaging project would look to ensure
they leverage any new technology.

- It was discussed that the project proposal needed to be updated. Markus
took the action item to make the following updates: 1) Add Pascal, Thomas
and Dan as interested parties, 2) Add the installation component, 3)
Specifically call out that provisioning was not to be included.

- It was also suggested that Dan and Markus be co-leaders of the project.

- The creation review is scheduled for January 31. Markus will work on the
slides and have them available by January 24. Ian will assist as
necessary.
