I am evaluating BIRT coming from a Jasper point of view.

Those reports have Calendar type selections and the input type is typically java.util.Date and a click and select date.

All of the BIRT samples don't have any of this type of input and since we're working with large data, input dates is a must.

What does BIRT have in the way of this type of parameter?

GUI selection, example reports showing this type of addition to a SQL addition.

BIRT Designer Professional has calendar selection out of the box. If you don't want to go to the commercial version, you can add the calendar picker to the existing viewer yourself, fairly easily. I think this post from the BIRT Developer Center covers how it's done:
