Hello (Pratik and Randy),

I have been looking over the draw2d.text package and examples as well as the
org.eclipse.gef.text.examples. I am liking what I am seeing. Thanks for
writing these.

I have a need to use both these packages (draw2d for the text related
figures, and the gef mvc triplets related to these in the text.examples
package).

Pratik or Randy, I saw an earlier post from you saying that the
org.eclipse.gef.text.examples package was not done by any stretch. Can you
rattle off a few of the things you would like to see done with this.
Perhaps I can assist as it lines up with what I need anyway. In particular
I need to add some of the Text related artifacts to an XYLayout setup and
think I made need to make some new mods/extensions. If you can tell me what
you think the current status of this org.eclipse.gef.text.examples package
is and where you would like to see it go, that would help me and perhaps
allow me to assist a bit on this.

Let me know.

Regards,
Bruce Trask

Bruce,

Pratik and I are not actively working on GEF any more. We know that we
needed to add new types of navigation (for example Page Down). Also, we
needed new concepts to support expected behavior, such as expanding the
selection range during swiping, or even changing it from a range to object
selection. An example of this is selecting table cells in Word. Initially
you are swiping a Range, but once the mouse goes beyond the starting cell,
selection changes to "objects", such as the cells themselves, and the range
become null. Also, we wanted to inherit the keybindings from Eclipse's Text
plug-in, but the dependency implied by that was not very attractive.

As far as function for just rendering text itself, you could spend years
trying to add all of the nuances of HTML and CSS.
