I don't know whether its possible to do it exactly the way you want to,
but you can graphically insert contained children of links. For doing
so, create a node mapping in the gmfmap for the contained element
without specifying a compartment on the top level. Next, create a link
mapping (for the link connecting the link with its child), with target
feature being the containment feature and the other fields left blank.
This way you can draw the link's children on the canvas and then draw
links from the link to its children (actually making them its children,
before this their containment is undefined).
