How can I open a file in external editor from Eclipse? [message #193995] Wed, 14 February 2007 12:17 Go to next message

I'm using Eclipse as IDE, but for some file types I'd like to use Vim
editor - because of its syntax highlighting and fast editing features.

What I do now is to drag file from eclipse Package explorer over Vim
editor, edit the file and refresh the file list in Eclipe. Which is kind
of clumsy...

Is there any way how to add someting like "Edit with Vim" into Eclipse
file context menu? For instance by right-clicking the file in
PackageExplorer.

I tried viPlugin for Eclipse, but it is not what I need - namely it lacks
syntax highlighting support.

Thanks for an answer, Martin.

Right click on resource -> open with -> other -> external programs and
eventually browse.

you can set editor for file extension:
Windows->Preferences
General-> Editors -> File Associations

Is that a new menu path in 3.3? Because it does not work that way up to
and including 3.2.1. For those versions you'll have to specify an
external editor for each file extension you want via the Preferences,
under General > Editors > File Associations

Hope this helps,
Eric

There are responses about how to specify an external editor, but I'd
like to know what kinds of files you are talking about. There are many
Eclipse plug-ins that provide syntax-highlighting editors for numerous
file types, so it is quite possible that you could avoid using the
external editor completely, with the right guidance.

Hi Eric,
Actually you are right, the feature I was talking about is not available
in 3.2.1 (I have 3.3m5).
