So, there is one tutorial to help newbies get started on web-tools,
http://www.eclipse.org/webtools/community/tutorials/BuildJ2E EWebApp/BuildJ2EEWebApp.html, which
looks pretty good, but has a bunch of instructions and screen shots that are either wrong or out of
date. Still, I have created the little "snoop servlet" and so on, I think correctly -- but when I go
to run the server, I get the attached cryptic and useless-to-me error dialog -- ports 8005, 8080,
and 8009 are in use. Any idea what I can do here? (I simply have no clue how to work out who's using
those ports.)

For Windows, open a DOS console and execute "netstat -abno". I'm
guessing the equivalent on *nix would be "netstat -anp".
Assuming you are on Windows, did you install Tomcat via the exe and
installed Tomcat as a service, and is that service is currently running?
If so, you can change the ports that the Eclipse Tomcat server will
use by double-clicking on the Tomcat server in the Servers view. In the
editor that opens, change the port numbers in the Ports section to
non-conflicting values that aren't in use by some other program.
Changing the first digit to '9' for each of the ports might be a good
first shot.

For info on the Tomcat support in WTP, you can now refer to this Tomcat
FAQ on the Web Tools web site:
http://www.eclipse.org/webtools/faq/TomcatServerFAQ.html
Hopefully, it will make it clear how it is able to successfully use your
installed Tomcat without interfering with it.
As for the 404 error, it can happen for a lot of reasons. There isn't
enough info to make anything more than a simple guess. If you copy and
pasted the "http://localhost:8080/tutorial/snoop" URL provided in the
tutorial, it's going to hit your Tomcat service. Since that server
isn't the one running the tutorial webapp, a 404 error would be the
expected response. You would need to update the port in that URL to
18080 for it to work.

That FAQ looks to be useful, thanks.
Apparently the WTP wants me to *either* start the server (right-click in Servers View on the server
item, Run ...) *or* start the "Web Content" in the Project Explorer -> right click, Run... (If I
start the server first then try to start the Web Content, I am told ports 18080, 18005, and 8009 are
in use. If I stop the server, then start the Web Content, Eclipse flips to the Server view and tells
me that that server is starting. Have I interpreted that data correctly?
I did also think to try with "18080" as the port; same problem. Just tried it again, and had the
same problem. The netstats confirms that tomcat5.exe is using 8080, 8005, 8009, whereas javaw.exe is
using 18080, 18005, 18009. But, oddly, there is now also this:

If the Servers view shows the Tomcat server stopped and the 18xxx ports
are still in use (TIME_WAIT also indicates "in use" but I forget exactly
what it means), it would appear that you have an orphaned Tomcat
process. You can use Task Manager to kill that javaw.exe process. That
will be necessary before you can start the server in Eclipse. I can't
say how it got orphaned. I know crashing out of Eclipse with the server
running can do it. Also, Tomcat under the right conditions can be
stubborn about not fully exiting when asked to shutdown.
