Customize Eclipse [message #1196052] Tue, 19 November 2013 03:15 Go to next message

Hello everybody,

i wasnt sure where to put this topic, maybe an admin knows better and push it elsewhere.

Im a student at the University of Karlsruhe and working on a project to customize Eclipse.

Background:
Our first semester students got a lecture in Java programming. Therefore we are using an IDE called Editing Java Easily: http:// www.mps.de/kuestermann/cms/ejescreenshots .html
This is a very basic IDE with a very simple User Interface. We are using it, because we believe that students would be confused with a out of the box eclipse IDE.
Sounds good, but we do have a lot of problems with the IDE. It crashes a lot of times and is not working proper.

My Project:
Is it possible to customize Eclipse in a way, that it looks simple just like the IDE we are using right now. Therefore create views/perspectives that are not too confusing and minimal in functionality. These new views/perpectives need to be deployed with a installer (or something like that) to every student.

My Question:
Which options do i have to customize the UI? I have seen, that i can customize the perspective like this: http:// i.stack.imgur.com/o4Src. png
But with this option, i cant change the size of buttons etc. And furthermore is it possible to export those customized perspective's?

Is there a another way to change the UI of Eclipse? For example with XSLT..

Would be nice if someone could give me some ideas to start with.
Thank you very much
Niko

I can't comment specifically on customizing the display, but I can suggest an alternative to look at called DrJava (http://www.drjava.org/) It is a project out of Rice University designed to help students learn Java and includes some Eclipse compatability.

Hi David,

thank you for your reply.
That looks interesting, but we really want to solve it with eclipse. As you mentioned they developed an plug-in for Eclipse which simplifies the UI of eclipse. They even released the source code of it -> i will look into that.
THANK YOU.

Anyone else got an idea, how to solve my question?

Thank you guys
Niko
