I get the message 'an error has occured' when starting eclipse.exe. I have
been running eclipse for a year, and want to unzip a 'clean instal' to a
new folder, because I was trying eclipseMe, but don't want it or any
traces tangled into my projects any more. The old instal still works, but
I'm not able to get any new unziped eclipses to work, no mather what
version. Here is the log from when i run eclipse.exe, please help me
understand what is wrong

<log is placed at the bottom for better readability of the post>

using win xp pro
java 1.5.0
eclipse 3.1

I'm wondering where eclipse get's it's settings from. I wonder because,
after I try to run the new instal (which produces the posted log), the old
instal has several problems starting, so it seems it is getting some
properties from outside it's unzipped folder. When I start the old instal
after running eclipse from the new instal, I get this result (I quit every
time until it works)

1st time running, eclipse shows 'unable to restore workbench state' and
everything except the menu is just grey.
2nd time running, in eclipse, the 'Package Explorer' shows the message
'Unable to create view: An unexpected exception was thrown.'
3rd time running, eclipse is back to normal, and shows the view I used
before trying the new instal.
(all this happens every time I run the new unzipped eclipse before I run
the old one)

So, need help
-understanding the error log
-understanding where eclipse finds the settings that make the old one
behave strangly 2 times before finally working as it should (when I run it
after running the new install)

Here is the log...

First, the log file suggest to me that you have some XML parser (GNU
Aelfred ?) that your JRE is finding by default. Did you perhaps put it
in the lib/ext directory of your JRE/JDK?

Second, it sounds like you are trying to use the same workspace with the
two installations of Eclipse. If so, that is why you see the problems
when you go back to the original version - there is
information/configuration in the workspace left over from your
experiments with the other version that the original doesn't know how to
handle. For your experiments where the two versions are not compatible,
you'll want to have separate workspaces for each installation.

Hope this helps,
Eric

Thank you ever so much for the answer, I truly appreciate it !!!!!

I haven't installed an xml parser on purpose, but then again you never
know what has gotten onto the system. I think it might have been
introduced when I tested eclipseMe (I remember eclipseMe complained that
it couldn't create some stylesheet or something when altering J2ME
settings from the menu).

The workspace issue. Yes I think you are right. I will fiddle a bit with
the wokrspace settings and see what happens. If anyone are reading these
posts, I will up my findings in case someone gets into the same troubles.

Again, thanks for the hints !

Yes, you were right. The issue with restoring the workspace seemes to
happen because one of the times i tested, I tested with a copy of my
original instal. This copy of course reffered to the workspace in the
original location, not the workspace in it's own copied directory.

Now I'll try to figure out the xml parser part.

THANK YOU !!!

You were rigth. In my java runtime directory

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\lib\ext

I found several files that I needed for a project long time ago, among
them gnujaxp.jar from
http://www.gnu.org/software/classpathx/jaxp/jaxp.html. It is obviously not
compatible with whatever eclipse uses/wants. I simply removed it
(actually, the folder I listed is empty on a fresh jre instal, so I moved
everything out to a backup location).

Now everything works 100% like it should, and new and old installs work
side by side, as long as I don't get workspaces tangled into eachother by
misstake.

Thank you for taking the time to help, this was a life saver for me, it
also seems to have fixed my problems with eclipseMe !!!!!

PS, note to other java/eclipse noobs like myself, the jre ext directory at
(my instal) C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\lib\ext is the one used when
running eclipse. You may have several other installs of the jre. You may
also have a directory like (my instal) C:\jdk1.5.0. So if you get this
problem with eclipse itself, first check which runtime environment is
running eclipse for you (which I assume would be your systems default
(jre) runtime environment, ie check your jre path). Then if you get other
problems with specific projects, each project in eclipse may be pointed to
use any chosen jre on your system (it's somewhere in the run-as project
settings for each project).
