I'm looking for the most basic of things but having a hell of a time
finding them. Where the heck are the update sites for these projects???

Only about one or two bother to make this info easy to find.

Hello,

Well basically I'm trying to do my whole initial installation (after the
initial install of course) using the Install/Update feature of Eclipse so
it can be managed by Eclipse as updates happen. But every time I try and
install something, it "says" it requires something else (like the Visual
Editor) and then I have to try and find their update site. Same for EMF,
GEF, etc. I've been having a heck of a time finding the update sites.

Having said that though, I think the messages I'm receiving when trying to
Intall new features are bogus. I'm about ready to give up.

thanks!

For an initial installation, the pains you talk about are precisely why
the Callisto "train" was created. After the initial Eclipse
installation, go to the "Callisto Discovery Site" instead (it's
installed by default as one of your two choices in 3.2 an beyond). That
site will give you quite a list of possibilities... pick only what you
want... when it tells you about unmet dependencies, hit the "Select
Required" button and you should get ONLY what is necessary to load your
choice of options.

The other beauty is that all the providers' update sites should then be
loaded into your list of update sites so that you can subsequently check
them for updates.

The one caveat I would warn you about only is a problem if you're behind
firewalls. In that case, you'd have already run into the need to set up
the "Install/Update" proxy setting, but subsequent to that first install
you'll find *another* proxy setting under the "Internet" tab. This is
bugzillaed and I understand a complete rework of the "proxy problem" is
already in the works (as a third setting for the same issue is under
Team=>CVS ... they're all to be merged into a single user-friendly setting).

I've found that the "Callisto approach" makes for pretty simple complete
installations of just what you need. Try it out!
