Hello everybody,

I have a weired problem with Eclipse Hudson 3.1.0 installed on my Windows 8 R2 Standard server: I have Hudson installed as a Windows service. When I stop and start it a couple of seconds later, from time to time, the following error is thrown and Hudson does not start:

"Windows could not start the Hudson Buildserver service on [my server host name]. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

As I said, this happens only from time to time, but definitely way to often. Once it happens, only uninstalling and installing the service helps. Sometimes even a reboot of the entire machine is required.

Do you have any hint about this problem?

Thanks a lot.

Regards
Timo

Hi,

Could you please check your event log on Windows to see if any errors have been reported. On Windows 7, open the Control Panel. Open the Administrative Tools group and open the Event Viewer. Please check the Application logs for any output from the Hudson service.

Could you post errors if any any?

Thanks.

Hello,

I checked the Windows event log and unfortunately, there are no logs at all from Hudson if it fails to start as described. It logs successful starting and stopping, but nothing if it fails Sad.

Do you have any further hints? This is definitively an annoying "feature" Sad

Regards
Timo

Hello,

I have checked the Windows event log and unfortunately, there are no logs if Hudson did not startup successfully. It logs starting and stopping if everything works, but not in the error case described above Sad.

Do you have any further hints.

Timo

Hello,

thanks for the hint. I have checked the Windows event log, but unfortunately, there are no entries from Hudson in case it fails to startup. It nicely logs starting and shutdown if everything works, but in case of the error described above, there's no log entry at all.

Do you have any further hints?

I have been trying to reproduce this problem on a Windows 8 machine, unsuccessfully so far. I've been able to restart the service successfully so far. Could you give us more information on your server configuration? Do you have security enabled? Is there anything specific that triggers this failure i.e. any job that has been run or anything other pattern that you can discern?

Thanks.
Latha

Hello,

sorry for the delay... I have been busy with different stuff the past days...

Well, unfortunately, I cannot give you that many information about my setup as I simply don't know what could cause the problem. What do you mean with "security enabled"? Also - to my knowledge - there is nothing specific that triggers that failure. It just happens quite often when I stop the service and try to start it again. I tried different things already, such as waiting a couple of minutes between shutdown and and subsequent startup - it did not help specificially. Whenever the failure occurs, the only thing that definitely helps is to uninstall the service, reboot the complete machine, reinstall the service and start it... and this is quite unsatisfiable as you can imagine. Maybe one thing to note is that when uninstalling the service in that situation it switches to "disabled" in most cases, instead of disappearing from the services panel completely.

Any further hints are much appreciated!

Thanks for your help so far.

Best regards
Timo

Thanks a lot.
