Eclipse news and/or Bugzilla harveted by spammers [message #16141] Tue, 01 March 2005 21:47 Go to next message

Cross-post intentional; I'm trying to reach a broad audience of the
newsgroup community.

The past couple of weeks I've started to received an increase in spam to
my email address that I ONLY use for Eclipse newsgroups and Bugzilla. I
am wondering if anyone else has noticed this.
Also, what steps are taken by the management of those forums to prevent
this kind of harvesting? I know about the rudimentary user/password
required to access them, but I also notice that everyone appears to get
the same user and password combination which may not be enough.

Well, me too (something about "new price").

I have written previously that bugzilla pages are going to be exploited
for spam.
Furthermore, bugzilla pages are indexed by google, so we might have lost
this war already.

Unfortunately, so far there has been no appropriate response from the
site admins and
a chilly response from the community.

Please continue this thread in the eclipse.foundation group exclusively,
as it's the most appropriate for this topic. Thanks.

Bugzilla has recently been upgraded to the latest version; prior to
this, e-mail addresses weren't being munged and were easily gathered by
spambots. Even with the new release, the e-mail addresses are only
obfuscated by replacing the '@' character with @ , hardly a
complicated algorithm to circumvent.

As for the newsgroups, I do recommend spam-proofing your e-mail address.
I'm not sure to which extent someone is willing to configure newsgroup
and http bots for authentication, but it's not complicated.

I will create myself a new e-mail alias to test if these measures are
enough. I'll keep you posted.

Denis
