Stable Version 2.0.1? [message #161059] Sun, 18 November 2007 14:53 Go to next message

Hello everybody

From the Web Site I read that the Version 2.0.1 is the latest stable
Version. Nevertheless, downloading the full package (eclipse + gmf +
everthing required) does not work :-( (So why is it called stable???)
Also downloading eclipse and using the update manger (asking it to give
me the latest versions) downloads Version 1.whatever (So why is it
called the latest Version)

I am getting the impression that the GMF Project lacks the resources to
properly maintain and document it. Am I right?

Regards
Martin

You're going to need to provide more details on your problem than this,
beginning with the exact version of the dependencies you have installed and
any error messages that may appear in your .log file.

I installed 2.0.1 cleanly from the Europa update site into a fresh 3.3.1
platform SDK and managed to complete the entire tutorial during my last
update of its content. It seemed "stable" to me.

Regarding resources to maintain and document, your contributions are more
than welcome.

Hi Richard,

1st try:
Went to the eclipse gmf download site and downloaded the site. Clicked
on Consolidated requirements zip and then downloaded
GMF-baseplatform-2.0.1-win32.win32.x86.zip. I thought this would be the
easiest way since it should contain everthing. It didn't work. Checking
the help->about menu show's gmf 1.0.0 plugin ....

2nd try:
Downloaded europa from the eclipse site and used the update manager to
download gmf with all the dependencies. After downloading it show in
help->about->features that gmf version 1.1.0 is installed. :-( Are you
sure u have the right version, because yes it downloads a version, but
it doesn't seam to be 2.0.1 ...

Looking at the gmf documentation there is no
org.eclipse.gmf.runtime.diagram.ui.preferences, but my code imports it
without a problem (which was created using 1.0.3).

Regards
Martin

The base downloads are produced by our builder and include only the GMF
build requirements, not GMF itself. The GMF features included in the base
are the feature used to assemble the base itself, and one that specifies our
third party libraries. You will need to install GMF itself after unzipping
the base.

Feature and plug-in versions are incremented using the guidelines published
here: http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/Version_Numbering I suspect the
feature version you are looking at is the runtime feature, though it's at
1.0.100 in the 2.0.1 release, not 1.1.0. The Europa and SDK features are at
2.0.1. Or, are you saying you used the GMF update site? I suggest you
begin with the 3.3.1 platform SDK, go to update manager, select the Europa
Discovery Site, and GMF Europa Edition from under Models and Model
Development category.

Hi Rich,

thanks for the answer. Nevertheless, very confusing that the release
2.0.1 has the feature number 1.0.100 (And a bit strange that you first
have to read a four page document ...) I checked an I have the feature
1.0.100 installed, so I seam to be fine here.

But why is the versioning so complicated? The sdk has Version number
2.0.1. Why not the Framework.

Regards
Martin

GMF has 2 main components: a runtime component, and a tooling/generation
component. The SDK includes both, and takes the highest number of its
included features. As the runtime did not make any changes to cause its
major version number to increment during the 2.0 release timeframe, it
remained in the 1.x range. The tooling side did have major change, so it
incremented to 2.0. As a project, we release versions equal to the highest
included feature, so 2.0 in the case of the last iteration.

The projected version of the next iteration (the Ganymede release due in
June) is 2.1, but could change to become 3.0 if there are indeed
API-breaking changes, or anything else outlined in the guidelines that would
trigger the major segment number change.

We didn't create the guidelines, but they seem reasonable and ensure proper
integration and updates.

Hope this helps rationalize the numbering,
Rich
