Subclipse vs. Subversive [message #14826] Fri, 21 March 2008 15:30 Go to next message

Can someone provide a definitive description of the differences between
Subclipse and Subversive, it is not immediately clear what (if any) the
relationship is between the two plugins. This is based on a number of online
articles that I have read that lead me to believe the Subclipse is being
rolled into Subversive or maybe it was the other way around.

Thanks in advance.

Steve,

Subversive has emerged to become an official Eclipse Subproject a little
while ago. Subclipse is lead by the group behind the Subversion server,
but so far I have not seen evidence of their plans to join Subversive or
the Eclipse Foundation. An invitation to that has been turned down by
them AFAIK.

I've been using both plugins a lot in real life project situations.
While earlier versions of Subversive turned out to be largely
incompatible with Eclipse based products like JBuilder 2007 or Borland
Together I hope, some of these problems may have been solved in the
course of becoming an Eclipse project? I last saw those problems when it
was still a Polarion-only proprietary project.

Aside from that and a few minor issues with recent Ganymede builds (M4)
I have been quite happy with Subversive.
Although Subclipse may have picked some of those up, it has a couple of
advantages, mainly better support for the SVN "trunk" concept.
And a "tag" mechanism based on similar standard folders in the
repository. Which allows clean and consistent tag labeling without
having to copy entire folders or create branches.

I hope, this short outline helps you to understand differences between
the 2 plugins? I'm sure, the actual Subversive members could also add
something they consider worth pointing out?

Werner

Thank you very much for the description (I was expecting a RTFM type of
response)

You're welcome.

Not necessarily for Subversive yet, but for a lot of other projects I
WTFM ("Write The Fucking Manual") so I am used to descriptions or
comparisons of their features, too.

Glad, it helped,
Werner

Hi Steve,

Both Subversive and Subclipse just do their job. Using both of them you will
be able to work with SVN. But there are few differences, mostly related with
usability, extensibility and general way, selected by two teams:

1. Subversive is and "official" eclipse.org project. It means that
Subversive has all project infrastructure at eclipse.org, project plan is
synchronized with Eclipse development and Subversive is a part of
simultaneus Ganymdede release.
2. Subversive team actively participate in life of the Eclipse Community.
Subversive team memebers take part in EclipseCon, Eclipse Summit Europe,
other events.
3. Subversive provides easy API and reusable components for integration with
other plugins. As the result there are set of integrations with open-source
and commecial projects, which continuously grows.
4. Subversive provides support for different project layouts, cary about
trunk, brances, tags structure, etc.
5. Subversive has feature for features browsing.
6. Other minor differences - UI polishing, icons, few differences in
operations

Maybe Subclipse has some features better then Subversive - Subclipse users
can post here their thoughts, so you can see objective picture.
Selection of any of these plugins is a topic of personal taste. You can
download both, try and make your own choice.

Best regards,
Igor Vinnykov
