We have a * testable * update site available, at

http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/testUpdates/

for any of you in the community that enjoys helping with earlying testin=
g.

If you see any problems (or even successes!) please comment in
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=3D122774

If no problems are reported after a day or so,
I'll promote to "real" update site at

http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/updates/

Hey David, just on a quick glance, is the URL in this sentence correct:
To use this update site in your existing installation of Eclipse, add
http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/updates/ as a remote site in your
update manager. See Eclipse Help for general information about using
Update Manager.

or should it be the .../testUpdates/?

Well, you are right, it should be
http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/testUpdates/

for right now, for the next 24 hours or so. But, I left it as
http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/updates/

so once its confirmed, I can just copy from once directory to
another. The web page is supposed to reflect what "the real" site
will eventually say (for accurate test :) ... guess I should make that
a variable or something, but will leave for this round.

thanks much,

Well, yes, now that you ask :)

1. Linux, perhaps?

2. Mixup different "install histories"?
start with 3.1 + WTP 0.7
then update to 3.1.1
then update to WTP 1.0

3. Plus, I'd appreciate knowing anyone's
experience using mirror sites.
(I think they should work fine, and
I think they've had enough time to
replicate, but I haven't tested yet).

4. Also, you might try several "varieties"
of using a seperate "install location".
I tried base in one, all of WTP in another, and
seemed fine ... maybe try base in one,
emf, jem, and gef, in another,
and then WTP in a third?

After installing, just see if it
went ok, by testing main function,
e.g. if you can create a dynamic web
project, then the install must have worked :)
Well ... you might want to try a web service
or something too.

thanks.

(To be really fussy) Some spelling errors:
"Eclpse 3.1.1 base platform"
"features of the of Eclipse Web Tools Project (WTP)"

Just to get it right: the test site it only useful for installations where
either WTP < 1.0 or no WTP at all is installed?

Yes, that is correct.

(And, to be even clearer ... whenever anyone is doing "early tests", I'd=
recommend one never use their
normal developement environment, but to "construct" a special one, just =
for the tests.)

Ah yes...on to make that much easier, I _really_ wish the packagers of
Eclipse would leave "eclipse" off as the root of the zip file system so
that I can easily set up several test areas without have to put them
into another directory and have an unnecessary level or do a bunch of
renames...

Me too ... but the name 'eclipse' has been hard-coded into a number of places and several tools fail if they are missing an 'eclipse' directory containing 'plugins' and 'features'.

However, it's become so ingrained in Eclipse's assumptions of what's there that even if a bug was raised against it, it would probably be closed WONTFIX within the week :-(

I'm not exactly sure what you want to accomplish, but have you played wi=
th "configuration manger"?
To some extent, it allows you to install * part * of your plugins in a d=
ifferent location, so it seems easeir to me, to set up (and then delete)=
some portions of a test area. [I've just started using it a little,
though].

Hi David,

on the WTP download site (http://download.eclipse.org/webtools/downloads/) there
is a link to the old update site for 0.7
( http://www.eclipse.org/webtools/development/updatesite/updat esite.html).
Shouldn't this be linked to the new one ?

Best regards

Wolfgang

In bug 122774 you asked whether I surf through the internet with the firefox
javascript console open ;-). Nope, I don't (I'm not The Internet Style
Guardian), but I configured IE to show me error messages if javascript is
invalid (can really be annoying on some pages ;-) ).
