i'm trying to install eclipse on Mac OS X 10.4. After fully unzipping
eclipse-SDK-3.1.2-macosx-carbon.tar.gz I go to the eclipse directory and
run the installer. Immediately, I get the following message: "An error
has occurred. See the log file ../workspace/.metadata/.log" The only
thing the installer does is create that "workspace" directory, but there
is nothing in it! please help!

I found this in a different eclipse newsgroup. Perhaps it may help. I'm
going to try this this evening and see what happens.

I recieved the same error as you. May I ask if you have an Intel based Mac?
I do so it may be that the PowerPC version of 3.1.2 is not compatible....

Try : 3.2M5.
