Hi,

This is a newbie (as far as Eclipse & Java are concerned) looking for a kickstart to get into the technology.

I am an experienced developer but have not developed in Java/PHP/Eclipse before. I have started looking only short while and notice the number of variants.

1: I will be developing new server based java apps
2: working with a PHP developer and bug fixing existing PHP set of apps (not developed in Eclipse)
3: finally looking at making apps available on Android
(My development machine is Windows 8 - but the target machine will not)
I want to start with HTML5. Because I have no history in this environment then I will have "styles" to forget or adapt.

The list is in my priority order. I am obviously on a tight learning curve.

(Please note that in the following phrases the words, at the moment, are just buzz words and has no real meaning to me)
Some sights suggest "Helios" flavour is best
There are 12 packages listed but what the subtle differences are, are unknown to me.

Can anyone suggest my best starting package (I presume Eclipse will allow me to add to the environment to work in the multiple fields).

Thank you,

An ignorant Newbie.

You could ask in the PHP forum. Here's what I would do, but I do not do
PHP. I would install Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers, then install
the additional material for PHP development. The contrary would
doubtless also work (Eclipse IDE for PHP with WTP plug-ins).

I would install Juno (not Helios) because it's later. However, Helios
was rock-solid and Indigo also seems rock-solid.

Yeah, the package names are something you should ask about in the
Eclipse PDT forum.

Best of luck.
