[p2] How do you tell your users whats new? [message #129460] Mon, 20 April 2009 16:56 Go to next message

We are delivering incremental bug fix releases to our product using p2.

We have a help document similar to the platform Whats New page. We can
link to this from the Welcome page but for users that are just simply
updating, the welcome page is not going to get shown after they install
the new version.

If I was an end user, I'd prefer to see a notice in the Available
Updates dialog which explains what is "new" in that version -- BEFORE I
install it.

Has anyone found a good way to communicate this information to their users?

Ideally, there would be support for placing a hyperlink in the
SelectableIUsPage details area. Right now its just a plain text widget.

What are peoples experiences here?

Regards,
Ben

Hi, Ben.
There is an IU property called IInstallableUnit.PROP_DOC_URL which is
shown on the General page of the IU properties page. The user sees a
link for this when they push the "More..." link in the details area.
Admittedly this is not something your typical user could figure out, but
if you were so inclined, you could put some description text that helped
guide them there.

Having links in the details is an interesting idea and it would be worth
opening an enhancement bug about this. Another idea would be to revisit
what happens when the user presses the "More..." link. Right now we
open the properties page but we could instead launch the doc, etc.
