Hello!
I would like to add a variety of graphs to my RAP application like scatter
plots and perhaps moving charts like trendalyser
http://www.gapminder.org/

So my options seem to be to use BIRT (not clear how to do that yet) or to
create a custom RAP widget, using some Flash-based library like
Google's AJAX API:
http://code.google.com/apis/ajax/playground/?type=visualizat ion#motion_chart

Any advice which is the better strategy? How difficult would it be to
implement some Flash-based graphing library as a RAP widget?
Many thanks!

Hi David,

using BIRT is one possibility. You can leverage the BIRT chart engine to
draw the charts and display them in the RAP application. See this
article and keep in mind to use a file renderer instead of the SWT renderer:
http://www.eclipse.org/articles/article.php?file=Article-BIR TChartEngine/index.html

Using a flash-based chart there is no way around creating a little
custom widget to show the flash object. Keep in mind that flash (same as
applets) are drawn on top of the browser and may hide application dialogs.

What about the Google Charts API? They offer a chart drawing API
controlled by URL parameter. This way you can use a simple browser
widget. The charts API is nice (not as powerful as BIRT) but really easy
to integrate.
See http://code.google.com/apis/chart/

Cheers
Benny
