Why does apt-get still deliver just v3.5? When can we expect this to be updated?

Note: I've tried manual installation, but have experienced what seems to be a common problem with the archive breaking when attempting to tar extract, even though the md5 checks out:

...
...
eclipse/plugins/org.eclipse.ui.ide.source_3.7.0.v20110928-1505.jar

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

I don't mind using 3.5, I've got my win-box for 3.7 if I'm desperate, but it would obviously be nice to get it updated to the latest edition in Linux as well.

Never, never, never, never, never, never get Eclipse from any OS distro
unless your platform is so bizarre that they have to create a special
package to get it to work. Always and ever get Eclipse from eclipse.org.

As I had stated in my initial post, the archive wont even extract without breaking.

On a side note, apt-get installs eclipse beautifully for me without any issues whatsoever, so I can't say I understand your reasoning in that regard.

Eclipse isn't involved in the packaging for any of the Linux distributions. You will need to consult the Debian package maintainers to find out when/if they plan on updating the version of Eclipse provided in their package repositories.

Using apt-get isn't an officially supported mechanism for installing Eclipse. If you have problems installing the base package or any add on plugins, you will need to contact the Debian maintainers as well.

I extract the Eclipse downloads onto Ubuntu Linux regularly. I've never had a problem extracting the archive file to the file system.

Okay that makes sense regarding packaging.

I'm glad extraction works okay for you, however I'm apparently not so lucky. As are quite a many other people, as can be observed via a simple google search of: Linux Eclipse Unexpected EOF in archive.

I understand that not everyone here is a Linux guru, but the reason I'm directing my inquiry here is because it is only this specific archive that's causing me problems.
