J2EE SDK support? [message #114696] Thu, 30 June 2005 02:57 Go to next message

Hi,

the website http://www.eclipse.org/webtools/index.html states, that
there'll be also support for the J2EE SDK. Is that already available?
I've looked in the present messages in the newsgroup and could not find
anything related to it, and the current version of the webtools
apparently only support WLS 8.1, tomcat, JBoss and JOnAS.

If it's my fault that the J2EE SDK support does not show up as a target
server, when I create a new J2EE project, what am I doing wrong?

And if the support is not there currently, when will it be?

We, i.e. the EG of JSR 264 and other OSS/J related JSRs, currently plan
to switch from eclipse to netbeans as our development platform, since
J2EE SDK support is mandatory for us - we need to validate our
applications with the AVK.

Kind Regards,
Andreas Ebbert

Interesting requirement ... You may need to get a more current version, and check out
the lower left corner of the page you reference above. Try M5 ... it will have
(as did our previous M4) an adapter for a Geronimo server. Will that help?
You can not check validate with AVK on Jonas or JBoss?

Support for Geronimo will not help in this respect. Applications can
only be tested with the AVK (BTW: Application Verification Kit), when
they are deployed on the J2EE SDK, or SJSAS (Sun Java System Application
Server). See the following page for details on the AVK:

http://java.sun.com/j2ee/avk/

BTW: I am currently running on M6 for eclipse and M4 for the webtools,
both from easyeclipse: http://sourceforge.net/projects/easyeclipse/

Kind Regards,

Ah ... I see now ... I'd stopped reading earlier when I saw it said it
was "free", and assumed with worked with any J2EE 1.4 compliant server.
Apparently not. Apparently only with Sun's J2EE SDK and or their SJSAS.
So ... in that case, I can't help .. I do not know of anyone working/testing
on those platforms, but hopefully others from community may know more.

(While not one of our requirements, I'd be surprised and interested if there was
anything we did in our (standard's based) support that prevented using
these verification tools).

Hi Andreas,
J2EE SDK is supported as a runtime environment. You can define a runtime
for it but in WTP server tooling terms, a runtime is what you can
compile against and this will not be enough for you since you need a
server to deploy and the server that comes with it not supported.

We do not support SJAAS in WTP but one of our bug reports has a server
definition file for Generic server framework that is supposed to work
with M5(I did not have a chance to test). The bug report is here
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=100736

Hope this helps.
