Is there some (possibly automatic) way to access a hierarchical EMF
model as an EFS FileSystem?

If not can someone suggest where to look in order to achieve this?

I've not heard of anyone doing that.

FYI:

I managed to do this and it's not very complex, just two classes and an
handful of methods.

This way I managed to set-up a full-fledged TextEditor to edit snippets
contained into model as String's
