Hi,

around two weeks ago we made an announcement for a EMFT-project
proposal, called EMF Transform. Since then, there has been quite some
discussion about the purpose of this project. First of all, we decided
to rename it to 'EMF Tiger' or just Tiger for short to avoid confusion.
Second, we have updated our preliminary proposal. It contains now a
discussion about the relationship to the existing transformation
approaches. The updated version is available here:

Please note that this is an unofficial proposal, i.e., we are still in
the pre-proposal phase. Originally this was a proposal for EMFT. But
after the reaction we got, we now believe that Tiger would also suit
well (maybe even better) in M2M.

This is why would like to ask you about your opinion about this. We
tried to make clear why we see the need for another transformation
framework in addition to ATL, QVT and Xtend. Even though we can do
standard source-to-target translations with Tiger, our main focus is on
in-place transformations, used for instance in refactorings,
reconfiguration or runtime models of executable languages
(transformations as virtual machines). The second point is the formal
analysis that we can offer in our framework, e.g., we can check whether
a transformation terminates and always produces the same output.

So we are not trying to replace any of the existing approaches. Rather
we see additional application areas for M2M transformations and we
believe that our approach can offer better support for them.

It would help us a lot if you could give us some feedback on this.
Especially whether you agree that Tiger can add something or maybe
complement the existing approaches.

Cheers,
Christian
