Simple script terminates when I try to debug it. [message #93155] Tue, 10 February 2009 03:51 Go to next message

I am trying to get XDebug to work.

I have written the following simple script:

<?php
$name = "world";
for ($i = 0; $i >100; $i++ ){
print("Hello, $name ($i)!\n");
}
?>

When I execute the Eclipse Debug, I get an immediate:

<terminated> PHP Application
<terminated, exit value:1>G:\xampp\php\php.exe

in the Debug View. The system does not suspend on the first line of PHP
code as I would expect, given that the Debug configuration specifies to
do so.

Debug Configuration Settings:

debugger=Xdebug
exe=G:\xampp\php\php.exe
file=/simpleDebugExample/helloworld.php
break at first line=checked

php -m lists XDebug as installed

could you add
xdebug.remote_log="c:\xdebug_exe.log"

and post the contents of the log. Another thing worth trying is adding the line
phpinfo();
to your script and check that all the xdebug stuff is as it should be.
Also check that no firewalls are blocking port 9000 and nothing else listening on port 9000 (ie
before you start PDT do a netstat -a | find "LISTENING", and after starting PDT do a netstat -a |
find "LISTENING"), although PDT should report a problem in the error log at least if it cannot bind
to port 9000

Dave,

I have attached the log.

My Debug Configuration is a "PHP Script", not a "PHP Web Page" - so does
the port 9000 issue matter? When I exit Eclipse, netstat no longer
lists 9000 or 10000 as open, so I would think that is not the problem.

I created a "PHP Web Page" Configuration to see if the debugger would
work for a Web configuration. For Web configurations, my installation
of Eclipse uses a different PHP executable (the one that is in
Apache/bin instead of the one in my PHP directory). When I run the Web
configuration, the external browser loads with the script output, but
the debugger does not show the current execution line or halt on a
breakpoint (but the debug session does not immediately terminate as with
the "PHP Script" configuration.

I added phpinfo(), and the XDebug setting are in the phpinfo output(see
listing below).

I wonder what else could cause the Debug system to not suspend on a
breakpoint?

Thanks,

Dave

Did you try set up debug environment in accordance with this doc ?

I am at a bit of a loss for this one at the moment. The log you sent shows that PDT and Xdebug are
talking to each other. The script being executed is Z:/Workspace/simpleDebugExample/helloworld.php
and a step_into is being done which should initiate execution and stop at the first line, but it
isn't stopping and the script ends.

could you try putting a breakpoint on the 2nd and 3rd lines of your script and try running again ?
also could you attach the log again. Also can you add a line
echo "started\n";
and
echo "ended\n";
to the top and bottom of the scripts and confirm that these get echoed out to the console.

Which version of php are you using ? that may have some influence. One last thing can you append
your php.ini file as well to see if I can spot anything unusual there.

PDT and Xdebug always use tcpip to communicate whether it is a standalone script or running inside a
web server so the port issue could matter but this isn't so in your case.

Regards
Dave

Yes, I have read all 36 pages twice! Hard to believe that the
instructions to turn on a debugger in Eclipse could be so complex. I
will go through it a third time.

I have used Eclipse's Java debugger since Eclipse 1.0, and have never
had any difficulty getting it to work - and no installation is required
- it just comes pre-installed as a part of Eclipse's Java support.

I am using the EasyEclipse PHP distribution - I am going to try and
install the PHP release from the Eclipse site. Is there a free version
of Zend studio? I looked at their site but it was unclear (I did not
see a link "Download Free Version", or "Download Community Version" as
with MySQL). Perhaps Zend studio would be a good option as well?

Thanks,

Dave Connerth

There isn't any free version of Zend studio there is only trial version,
i'm not sure, but I think that is 30-days trial

Dave,

I have attached a screen snapshot of Eclipse after running the script,
you can see the script, the breakpoints, and the resulting output. I
have attached the log file for the debug session as well, and my php.ini.

The version of php is 5.2.8, which is the version bundled with the
latest version of XAMPP.

However - when I went to the command line to do a php -v to get the
version, some errors were displayed that relate to XDebug. I have
attached a screen snapshot of the php -v command line output, and will
investigate the errors myself, as they may point to the cause of XDebug
not working.

Thanks for you help!

[PHP]

;;;;;;;;;;;
; WARNING ;
;;;;;;;;;;;
; This is the default settings file for new PHP installations.
; By default, PHP installs itself with a configuration suitable for
; development purposes, and *NOT* for production purposes.
; For several security-oriented considerations that should be taken
; before going online with your site, please consult php.ini-recommended
; and http://php.net/manual/en/security.php.

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About php.ini ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior. In order for PHP to
; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'. PHP looks for it in the current
; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory. The
; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
; the -c argument in command line mode.
;
; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and Lines
; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
; they might mean something in the future.
;
; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
; directive = value
; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
;
; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
;
; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
; | bitwise OR
; & bitwise AND
; ~ bitwise NOT
; ! boolean NOT
;
; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
;
; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
; sign, or by using the None keyword:
;
; foo = ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = none ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = "none" ; sets foo to the string 'none'
;
; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
;
;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About this file ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; All the values in the php.ini-dist file correspond to the builtin
; defaults (that is, if no php.ini is used, or if you delete these lines,
; the builtin defaults will be identical).

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

; be supported on the target server. For portable, redistributable code,
; be sure not to use short tags.

; Output buffering allows you to send header lines (including cookies) even
; after you send body content, at the price of slowing PHP's output layer a
; bit. You can enable output buffering during runtime by calling the output
; buffering functions. You can also enable output buffering for all files by
; setting this directive to On. If you wish to limit the size of the buffer
; to a certain size - you can use a maximum number of bytes instead of 'On', as
; a value for this directive (e.g., output_buffering=4096).
output_buffering = Off

; You can redirect all of the output of your scripts to a function. For
; example, if you set output_handler to "mb_output_handler", character
; encoding will be transparently converted to the specified encoding.
; Setting any output handler automatically turns on output buffering.
; Note: People who wrote portable scripts should not depend on this ini
; directive. Instead, explicitly set the output handler using ob_start().
; Using this ini directive may cause problems unless you know what script
; is doing.
; Note: You cannot use both "mb_output_handler" with "ob_iconv_handler"
; and you cannot use both "ob_gzhandler" and "zlib.output_compression".
; Note: output_handler must be empty if this is set 'On' !!!!
; Instead you must use zlib.output_handler.
;output_handler =

; Transparent output compression using the zlib library
; Valid values for this option are 'off', 'on', or a specific buffer size
; to be used for compression (default is 4KB)
; Note: Resulting chunk size may vary due to nature of compression. PHP
; outputs chunks that are few hundreds bytes each as a result of
; compression. If you prefer a larger chunk size for better
; performance, enable output_buffering in addition.
; Note: You need to use zlib.output_handler instead of the standard
; output_handler, or otherwise the output will be corrupted.
zlib.output_compression = Off

; You cannot specify additional output handlers if zlib.output_compression
; is activated here. This setting does the same as output_handler but in

; implications and is generally recommended for debugging purposes only.

Dave,

I figured it out from the error message I got from php -v. The issue
was resloved by commenting out the line:

extension=php_xdebug.dll in php.ini.

Turns out the xdebug extension must be loaded as a zend extension, which
was already being done in the "XDebug" section of php.ini:

zend_extension_ts="G:\xampp\php\ext\php_xdebug.dll"

I am not sure how these lines got into my php.ini's, I believe they came
with XAMPP in the php.ini files found in the PHP and Apache folders. I
probably uncommented them as I wanted the XDebug extension.

Thanks for you help!

Hi Dave, I just spotted the problem in your ini file as well. Glad you
got it sorted. It could be that xampp is distributing a slightly
incorrect php.ini file. You might want to report this back to them.

Cheers
Dave
