RAP in a servlet container [message #8118] Wed, 14 March 2007 23:32 Go to next message

Hello,

I have a problem getting Your Demo RAP work in a servlet container. I used
the bridge.war archive as explained on the equinox server page and copied
all plugins needed by RAP into its plugin folder. Is there anything else I
have to do. Maybe some configuration. It doesn't work when I call
http://localhost:8080/bridge/rap. The command
http://localhost:8080/bridge/sp_test works as described. It also work in
eclipse using the launch configuration.

Any Ideas?

A wiki or a short list of steps from the sample bridge.war to Your running
Demo RAP might be helpful.

Thanks for Your efford,

Markus Krüger

Hi Markus,

Deploying to tomcat does not work at the moment. This is due to handling
of configuration files for our engine, which has not been finally ported
to the osgi environment. We made some patches to make it work in an
earlier version but those were just "proof of concept" quality and we
decided not to put them into CVS (it is available from the RapExamples
page in the wiki, but the code is outdated -
http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/RapExamples) It may take a couple of
weeks until this gets fixed. If it is high priority for you let us know.

Jochen

Thank you for the answer, Jochen.
For now it is OK to develope and launch with eclipse, but we plan to supply
our new software until the end of april.
Do you think it is fixed until then? Otherwise we do not know how the
software will work for our customers.

Thank you,

Markus

Mid April == end of this week. Honestly, I don't think that this is
realistically possible for us. We'll look into this as soon as possible
but we just don't have the capacity at the moment.

Is there another way starting RAP on a linux server without a gui that I can
use as workaround for now?

Hi Markus, I'm not sure of this (I still haven't tried it), but when
Eclipse launch a RAP app in fact It is launched a java program in
console mode, you can see the command line, in [Properties] option from
[Debug] view, you will see something like this:

"C:\Archivos de programa\Java\jdk1.5.0_06\bin\javaw.exe"
-Dorg.osgi.service.http.port=8080 -classpath C:\Java\eclipse\startup.jar
-agentlib:jdwp=transport=dt_socket,suspend=y,address=localho st:2754
org.eclipse.core.launcher.Main -dev
" file:C:/Java/workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.pde.co re/RAP
MindPortal/dev.properties" -configuration
" file:C:/Java/workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.pde.co re/RAP
MindPortal/" -os win32 -ws win32 -arch x86 -console

Of course, you need all Eclipse plugins and jars necessary for RAP
environtment in your linux server and It's possible that you need a
Virtual X-Window like Xvfb.

It's only an idea

Regards.
Roberto.

Hi Markus:

I don´t understand well what you mean with a Linux server, if you only
need to launch the application in a certain machine and not inside any
concrete application server you can launch an osgi instance with the
adecuate bundles (plugins) (this is what Roberto´s code and rap´s
eclipse configuration do) and use for the moment the embedded jetty that
RAP brings, all running in your linux server in console mode.

I´ve done it without problems, you only need all RAP plugins (and your
application plugin dependences) and equinox.jar (the osgi
implementation) after you can start the osgi instance by calling:
java -jar [path-to] equinox.jar -console

After that you can install and start all required bundles (plugins)
using the osgi comands and when all bundles are started your application
will be up and running.

If you want your app running in a certain application server i can´t
help you :(

Regards, Raul

Hi,

mid-april latest won't work since this is now! Sorry for that -
unfortunately I caught a cold so this is the delay cause ;-) But I will work
on this next week (promised) so hopefully there should be a solution at the
end of next week.

Hi,

The RAP CVS contains a new project (org.eclipse.rap.demo.feature) that
demonstrates how to create a deployment archive (WAR). The deployment uses
the org.eclipse.equinox.servletbridge as servlet container hook. The
documentation is currently integrated in the project - see the
deployment_tutorial.html in the root directory.

Hello Frank,

first, thank you for implementing an example so fast. I needed it bad.
But I got a problem now and don't know how to fix or debug it. As I run my
RAP Application (about 70 Plugins) in eclipse witha launcher configuration
everthing works fine, but if I deploy it on a tomcat I get an error thaht my
perspective could not be constructed. Since I know that everything works
fine in eclipse I think it can just be a wrong configuration or a missing
plugin/dependency, but I don't know how to solve it. Is there any way to
compare the launch configuration against the different looking configuration
of the WEB-INF? Do you have any other Ideas?

Thanks,

Markus

Hi,

the org.eclipse.rap.demo.feature project isn't a content of the team project
set. You have to check out the project explicitly.

Hi,

the eclipse launch config.ini is located in case of the rap demo at:
<path to your workspace>\.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.pde.core\RAP Demo
it may helps to locate missing references.

The first thing I would do is to check the status of the OSGi bundles. If
you look at the runtime picture in the tutorial you see the console log of a
tomcat instance running on windows. The OSGi console is active after the
deployment of the rapdemo.war. If you look at the picture you see the 'ss'
command which induces the status printout of the bundles. Doing so you may
find a bundle which isn't active and causes the problem.

Also check the log file of the OSGi framework. The servlet bridge copies the
whole eclipse installation into the temp directory of the web context (under
tomcat the temp directories of the installed web-applications are located
under the work directory). If any problems have occurred at startup a log
file was written to the 'eclipse/configuration' directory.

Last but not least check the log files of your application server.

Hope that helps locating your problem!

Ciao
Frank
