PDT won't work without 5.0+ as it depends on EMF 2.3+.

As to PHPeclipse, I've installed it into Eclipse 3.4 on windows and
linux using its update site without incident, using both JDK 5 and 6.
Looks like the Nightly update site is gone, replaced with this Stable site:
