I am a bit new to EMF and GMF stuff. I am trying to find my way around, I would be glad if someone could help me out with the following doubt I have:

Suppose I have a meta model and while defining the graphical model, I have certain nodes A,B,C,D etc and certain links X,Y,Z etc.
Now, one of these nodes, say D should be composed of 3 compartments, and within those compartments I want to be able to add same diagram elements, i.e they should be available on the canvas as well as I should be able to draw them in the compartments,something like this :

(x) (Y)

D__________ ---->A-->C
A-->C
_________
B-->D
_________
B-->C-->A
_________

where ---> represent links x,y,z etc

Is such kind of thing possible ? And if it is, how ?

yes, you can.
You can use Child Node Reference.
