Hi,

I have been using Eclipse Helios for around a year, and now I tried to upgrade to the latest version (Indigo). I click 'Check for updates'. Halfway through, it aborts with this error message:

Unable to read repository at jar:file:/Users/xyz/Desktop/ShellEd.zip!/content.xml.
error in opening zip file

There is no file or directory called anything like ShellEd.zip on my desktop, nor can I find it anywhere else on my Mac.

I recently updated Mac OS X from Snow Leopard to Lion (OS X version 10.7.1).
My (old) Eclipse version is Version: 3.6.2 Build id: M20110210-1200
It is installed in /Applications/Eclipse

Any pointers to what I do wrong or how to proceed are most welcome. I could of course delete everything and start from scratch, but would appreciate not having to set up my projects and all my add-ons again.

Best regards

Jakob

First of all, the general recommendation when migrating to a new major
release is to just download it and install into a new location. Updating
from 3.6 to 3.7 (Helios -> Indigo) might work, but it could create
problems if you have some additional plugins that aren't compatible with
the new version.
As for the specific error you got, it indicates that at some point you
installed the ShellEd plugin from a local ZIP file (as opposed to an
update site); that ZIP file is no longer around so it can't check for
updates to ShellEd.
You can remove the ShellEd ZIP as an "update site." Just open the
Preferences and find Install/Update > Available Software Sites; there
you can remove it and try the update again.

Thank you very much, Eric, that was indeed the problem. I removed the .zip file as an update site (must have done something silly when I installed ShellEd, I had completely forgotten about that module). After doing that, the 'Check for updates' will install updates to all modules, but will not update from Helios to Indigo. I will follow your advice, and install it in another location.

Thanks for the help!

Jakob
