Hi,

I'm writing a dimpoma thesis about Reporting Frameworks, like Birt, Jasper and Pentaho.
JasperReports use XML to design a report, so the tutorials starts with explanation of the JRXML. But BIRT users seems to use Report Designer only and very seldom an Text-Editor to write *.rptdesign Files? Even write Design with Java(BIRT Design API) seems be better as XML? Why? Where can I find some examples or tutorials for writing *.rptdesign files?

The xml BIRT uses is described in the ROM (report object model)
http://www.eclipse.org/birt/phoenix/ref/rom/index.html. BIRT provides a
DE API (Design Engine API) to create, manipulate and save report
designs, libraries and templates. Here is a webinar on the API
