I'm running inside a VM. In the VMWare settings, I can see that the RAM alloted is 6016 MB which is 6GB. As recommended in our company I used -Xmx1024m (the default was 512) but eclipse fails to start, saying jvm exit code -1. The maximum value for Xmx that works is 660m.

My Eclipse build details are:
Eclipse Platform 3.5.2.M20100211-1343 org.eclipse.platform.ide
Java EE IDE Feature 1.2.2.20100217-2310 org.eclipse.epp.package.jee.feature.feature.group

Why is this happening? Please help before I shoot myself.

Please, stop threaten you would commit suicide (it's neither funny
nor helpful). Try running a simple HelloWorld using -Xmx1024M and
see if the problem persists. If the JVM fails to load again, then
it is not Eclipse specific but specific to the environment you're
trying to start the JRE in. Check there's enough free physical RAM
to start the JRE using the given heap options.
