Error compiling java file [message #592605]

When I try to run a java file the console show me the following message:

Error occurred during initialization of VM
java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

I download de jdk 1.3 and in the: Window --> Preferences --> Java -->
Classpath Variables I create the variable JAVA wich point to the jdk\bin
folder.

Can anyone help me??
I don't know what I make wrong...
