Hi,

I have read the proposal to contribute the Service Interface and Data Type
editors [1] to the WTP Incubator and eventually to WTP proper. I've also
read the wtp-dev thread started by the original announcement [2], including
the comparison [3] between the current WTP WSDL/XSD editors and the proposed
editors.

The comparison was interesting, and I think it should be either part of the
proposal or linked to from the proposal. While I may not fully agree with
all the statements in there, there is always value in documenting and
discussing new requirements and gaps in the existing tools. I will send a
separate note to reply directly to the comparison.

Following are some thoughts on the proposal.

Your experience may differ, but my very personal view is that subset editors
are inherently limiting. Users are sooner or later forced to use the full
featured editors because real life artifacts (industry standard schemas for
example) are notoriously complex and use constructs beyond the proposed
subset.

In general, I think it is better to avoid redundancy in function and effort,
but perhaps new ideas and experimentation is in order to flesh out new
features. I will document some of the new requirements and limitations in
bugzilla to ensure they are known. I am hoping that solutions to known
problems (field validation, markers in design view) or innovations
(filtering, new refactorings) will eventually be contributed back to also
enrich the existing editors.

I am happy to see that SAP is willing to allocate a good number of
developers to this new WTP incubator effort. I can only wonder how much
better the existing WTP tools would be this kind of help.

Good luck with the incubator project and looking forward to continuing the
discussion.

Valentin Baciu

Hello Valentin,

I agree that we need to continue the discussion and we will hopefully get to a common understanding of the value of the proposed editors.

Would you like to suggest a list of possible next steps, so that our efforts are aligned or you find it too early?

Kind regards,
Emil
