For the plug-in and feature files, this is a workaround for
inconsistencies with the text document implementation we have in WTP
according to bug 307524. It shouldn't have affected normal XML files as
I understand it, and indeed they seem to be fine when I try them. These
files without the .xml filename extension, they do have some sort of
filename extension, right?

Yes, they have an extension. I've opened a bug report, as something does
indeed seem to be wrong:
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=320996
But are saying that for the particular cases of the PDE contributed
content types (plugin.xml, feature.xml, *.product, site.xml, etc.), this
behavior is expected, caused by that workaround?
