I read somewhere that there is a new Zest version planned and somewhere in a source repo other than the official Eclipse CVS. Any hints?

As far as I know the latest version is documented at http://wiki.eclipse.org/Tree_Views_for_Zest#Deliverables and available from http://eclipse-soc.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/2009-treeviewsfo rzest/

Being past the Helios feature freeze with M7 by now, I'm afraid it won't. You could track progress of this in http://bugs.eclipse.org/283252 and http://bugs.eclipse.org/307807
