It was interesting to see this paragraph in the proposal:

<quote>
Developer tools that provide support for Virgo are out of scope for the
Virgo project as part of Eclipse RT. However, the Virgo team also
propose to work with the existing WTP and PDE projects to contribute
relevant developer tools for Virgo to those projects. These
contributions will be based upon the existing Bundlor and dm Server
development tools projects detailed below.
</quote>

Well, first, it was surprising, since as far as I can tell, no one in
WTP knows anything about it. I suspect you were just trying to document
things you've been thinking about, and that's good to know, but I think
your proposal would be better if it was more specific to what you were
actually proposing (not other possible proposals).

That said, it really does sound interesting, and the WTP PMC would like
to learn more about what you have been thinking about. Is this a few
wizards that fit in to existing WTP frameworks? A bunch of independent
code you'll be proposing as a new subproject of WTP? Perhaps a joint
meeting where you explain what you have in mind would be good? I'm
thinking of a meeting, since verbal question-and-answer is often faster
over the phone than in email. But, I think most of us are fairly
ignorant of this general area, and certainly of your existing tools, so
some education or demos would be helpful.

If interested, and convenient, I could arrange an invitation to one of
our PMC meetings (Tuesday's at 11, Eastern), since most of the WTP PMC
would be there ... or, you can host your own ... or ... ?

It really does sound like an interesting area and I look forward to the
possible collaboration.

Thanks,

Thanks for making contact. I've asked one of the Virgo team who specialises in tooling to respond here.

Hi David,

I've been leading the developer tooling for dm Server (now proposed as Eclipse Virgo) as an EPL-licensed component of our commercial SpringSource Tool Suite offering.

The dm Server Tools make heavy use of WTP in a way that we integrated dm Server with the WTP server framework and allow users to deploy their projects as OSGi bundles, PARs and Plans to the server.

We also extend PDE to deliver a tailored version of the MANIFEST editor that knows about the dm Server specific headers and provides access to a dm Server repository chain.

I'd be happy to join one of your PMC calls to talk and demo our tools and discuss opportunities for moving this to Eclipse alongside the server itself.

Regards, Christian

Thanks Christian, I'll work with you and WTP-PMC via email to see if we
can get something scheduled in one of our meetings within the next
month, or so.

Chris/all,

I just noticed in the recent Eclipse Survey, that neither STS nor SpringIDE
were mentioned by default. While JBoss Studio, MyEclipse or other popular
distros are.

Maybe something to discuss for next year?;-
