Hello,

I would like to use soft hyphens in my report design texts.

For the explanations of soft hyphens please refer to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_hyphen#Hyphens_in_computin g
http://www.yourdictionary.com/computer/soft-hyphen

In short words: A soft hyphen lets the system know where a word may be broken, if needed, for display purposes.

Typically soft hyphens are declared in HTML like:
 or or

Or in unicode: \u00AD

I tried to use this concept in my report design but without any success. Is this concept supported in BIRT? I know it already works for HTML presentations (automatically done by the browsers) but not for any other export format like PDF, Excel, PPT, etc.

Thanks in advance and best regards
Tobias

Tobias,

It would be good to open an enhancement request for this.

Hallo Jason,

thank you very much for your answer.
I thought this feature would be already available since BIRT's layout engine and render options already offer a boolean setting called "PDF_HYPHENATION":

http://www.birt-exchange.org/documentation/BIRT_231/EngineJa vadoc/engine/api/org/eclipse/birt/report/engine/api/IPDFRend erOption.html#PDF_HYPHENATION

If my mentioned feature is currently not supported what kind of feature offers the render option "PDF_HYPHENATION" ?

Thank you very much and best regards
Tobias

Tobias,

I believe that just determines whether do do hyphenation at all. It
does not let you specify where.
