Hi everybody,

I found a strange error, I think. I did a fresh eclipse 3.2 install. After
that I updated eclipse to version 3.2.2 using the built-in update
mechanism. Then I installed all the tools to use the JSF plugin: WTP, JST
and all required packages, one of these packages being the Visual Editor
including Java EMF Model version 1.2.1.

Until this point everything works ok, for example the faces-config.xml
editor gets started.

Now: if I use the built-in mechanism to update the installed features and
plugins I get an update only for the Visual Editor, in particular
org.eclipse.jem gets updated to version 1.2.3.

And now the faces-config.xml editor simply fails, I just get the source
code view .

To complete the strangeness, this happens to me only on my mac using
10.4.9. If I do the same procedure using Windows XP SP2 everything works
as expected.

Any hints what could go wrong?

... forgot to say: I installed wtp-jsf-R-1.5.3.zip for the JSF support.

Hi Pedro,

Hmm.. that's very strange. The only thing I think of is that WTP now
bundles JEM so perhaps there is a conflict with what is in VE. You should
to either the VE or WTP newsgroups for more on that.

One other question: are you doing both SWT/Swing and JSF development? VE
does not give visual development for JSF. JSF comes bundled with its own
Web Page Editor (a visual editor) for this purpose. Both should be able
to coexist, but I just want be sure you need them both.

Hi Cameron,

I did nothing particular, I just tried this
http://jsfcentral.com/listings/A93090?link tutorial. The Setup mentioned
in this tutorial was the only thing I adopted with the latests version of
the Eclipse Web Tools 1.5.3 and the corresponding JavaServer Faces plugin
wtp-jsf-R-1.5.3.zip. And, I used myfaces 1.1.5 instead of the SUN
Reference Implementation.

As I said, as long as I don't make this VE update, I can use the
faces-config.xml editor perfectly. These are the installed files by this
update, at least this is what the Install-Log tells me:

org.eclipse.ve_1.2.1.v20060817_M-zXJUB0fx_-eyDdh feature-install
org.eclipse.jem_1.2.3.v20070130_R----6zXJK-L2U8VZ feature-enable
org.eclipse.ve_1.2.1.v20060817_M-zXJUB0fx_-eyDdh feature-enable
org.eclipse.ve_1.2.1.v20060817_M-zXJUB0fxM-0vSdc feature-disabled
org.eclipse.jem_1.2.1.v20060815_M----6zXJJzKIRGVU feature-disabled

I will post this problem and the other news groups you mentioned.

Thanks for the reply, Pedro

In your Error Log view, do you get a list of disabled bundles?

Hi Cameron,

can't tell you at this very moment. I get access to my mac again in about
48 hours ... I'm not at home ...

I will tell you later what the error log view tells me.

Best regards, Pedro

Hi Cameron,

well, it took longer than 48 hours :-). Here is what the error log view
says:

Error
Tue Apr 03 13:50:58 CEST 2007
Problems occurred when invoking code from plug-in:
"org.eclipse.ui.workbench".

Error
Tue Apr 03 13:50:58 CEST 2007

Error

Unable to create editor ID

That's about it. Ah, one more thing: doing this very same tutorial on my
Laptop using 10.3.9 works without a single problem ...

Best regards, Pedro

Hmm.. so this is a MAC only issue and there are no stack traces in any of
those log messages?

Can you launch a bug?

Thanks,

Cameron

Thanks for posting the stack traces.

Are there any warnings about unloaded bundles or other exceptions? It
looks like the FaceConfig editor is either not there (more probably bundle
isn't loading properly) or some other error is causing it not to
initialize.

If you could a launch a bug and attache the .log file in the .metadata dir
of your workspace that would be ideal

Thanks,

Cameron.

Hi Cameron,

don't remember seeing any warnings around. Have to wait until the weekend
to get hands on my mac.

I will launch a bug as you suggest. In order to do so I will again
reproduce this situation in order to write everything I did as more
detailed as possible.

This means, this may take some days :-), but I guess you aren't too
surprised hearing this as I need always quite some time at the moment. I
wish a working day could have 48 hours ... ;-). OK, not for ever but for a
few weeks :-).

Best regards, Pedro

Hi Cameron,

I'm using MacOS X 10.4.9 and the following java version:

java version "1.5.0_07"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_07-164)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87, mixed mode, sharing)

I downloaded the file eclipse-SDK-3.2.2-macosx-carbon.tar.gz and using the
built-in mechanism I installed the JST and WST tools. After that I
installed JSF support using the file wtp-jsf-R-1.5.3.zip.

I did all these steps in order to try out this tutorial
http://jsfcentral.com/listings/A93090?link. I completed this tutorial
without a problem.

After this I launched the software update mechanism and eclipse tells me
that the Visual Editor needs an update. OK, I agree and JSF support
breaks, at least the Faces Config Editor breaks.

But I've found a workaround: if I change the order of the updates nothing
breaks.

1. download of eclipse-SDK-3.2.2-macosx-carbon.tar.gz
2. using the built-in mechanism to install the JST and WST tools
3. using the built-in mechanism to update the installed software (at this
point I get the Visual Editor update)
4. installing JSF support using wtp-jsf-R-1.5.3.zip

If step 3 gets interchanged with step 4 JSF support breaks.

I didn't launch a bug report yet, I'm awaiting your opinion on this
finding.

Best regards, Pedro

Hi Pedro,

Hmm.. that's very strange. The only thing I think of is that WTP now
bundles JEM so perhaps there is a conflict with what is in VE. You should
to either the VE or WTP newsgroups for more on that.

One other question: are you doing both SWT/Swing and JSF development? VE
does not give visual development for JSF. JSF comes bundled with its own
Web Page Editor (a visual editor) for this purpose. Both should be able
to coexist, but I just want be sure you need them both.

Hi Cameron,

I did nothing particular, I just tried this
http://jsfcentral.com/listings/A93090?link tutorial. The Setup mentioned
in this tutorial was the only thing I adopted with the latests version of
the Eclipse Web Tools 1.5.3 and the corresponding JavaServer Faces plugin
wtp-jsf-R-1.5.3.zip. And, I used myfaces 1.1.5 instead of the SUN
Reference Implementation.

As I said, as long as I don't make this VE update, I can use the
faces-config.xml editor perfectly. These are the installed files by this
update, at least this is what the Install-Log tells me:

org.eclipse.ve_1.2.1.v20060817_M-zXJUB0fx_-eyDdh feature-install
org.eclipse.jem_1.2.3.v20070130_R----6zXJK-L2U8VZ feature-enable
org.eclipse.ve_1.2.1.v20060817_M-zXJUB0fx_-eyDdh feature-enable
org.eclipse.ve_1.2.1.v20060817_M-zXJUB0fxM-0vSdc feature-disabled
org.eclipse.jem_1.2.1.v20060815_M----6zXJJzKIRGVU feature-disabled

I will post this problem and the other news groups you mentioned.

Thanks for the reply, Pedro

In your Error Log view, do you get a list of disabled bundles?

Hi Cameron,

can't tell you at this very moment. I get access to my mac again in about
48 hours ... I'm not at home ...

I will tell you later what the error log view tells me.

Best regards, Pedro

Hi Cameron,

well, it took longer than 48 hours :-). Here is what the error log view
says:

Error
Tue Apr 03 13:50:58 CEST 2007
Problems occurred when invoking code from plug-in:
"org.eclipse.ui.workbench".

Error
Tue Apr 03 13:50:58 CEST 2007
Widget disposed too early!

Error
Tue Apr 03 13:50:58 CEST 2007
Unable to create editor ID
org.eclipse.jst.jsf.facesconfig.ui.FacesConfigEditor: No editor descriptor
for id org.eclipse.jst.jsf.facesconfig.ui.FacesConfigEditor

I did all these steps in order to try out this tutorial
http://jsfcentral.com/listings/A93090?link I completed this tutorial
without a problem.

After this I launched the software update mechanism and eclipse tells me
that the Visual Editor needs an update. OK, I agree and JSF support
breaks, at least the Faces Config Editor breaks.

But I've found a workaround: if I change the order of the updates nothing
breaks.

1. download of eclipse-SDK-3.2.2-macosx-carbon.tar.gz
2. using the built-in mechanism to install the JST and WST tools
3. using the built-in mechanism to update the installed software (at this
point I get the Visual Editor update)
4. installing JSF support using wtp-jsf-R-1.5.3.zip

If step 3 gets interchanged with step 4 JSF support breaks.

I didn't launch a bug report yet, I'm awaiting your opinion on this
finding.

Best regards, Pedro
