Hi Robert,
A CCD document is still a conformant CDA document -- just with
additional constraints. If one would want to distinguish between the two
in an XDS environment, they'd use a format code. So far IHE has not
exactly done so for CDA and CCD. They do have format codes for much of
the PCC content profiles -- most of which are constrained forms of CDA.

more information on PCC be found here:
http://wiki.ihe.net/index.php?title=Frameworks#IHE_Patient_C are_Coordination_Technical_Framework

examples of format codes (we'll probably see these in 2009) can be found
here:
http://wiki.ihe.net/index.php?title=PCC_TF-2#IHE_Format_Code s

hope this helps,
Sarah
